1929 Gough, Gough & Hamer Limited founded by Edgar C. Gough, Harry H. Hamer and Tracy T. Gough, dealing in electrical goods. 1932 Secures the Caterpillar franchise from A S Paterson Limited. 1937 Harry Hamer separates the electrical goods franchises to form Hamer Electrical Company (still in existence today). 1938 Minister of Works, Bob Semple, drives a Caterpillar RD8 tractor over a wooden wheelbarrow to reinforce his government's pledge to reduce reliance on manual labour. A part of the handle from the wheelbarrow is showcased at our Chch Head Office. 1939 Edgar Gough separates the electrical engineering business to form E C Gough Ltd (now Gough Technology). 1945 The company gains the Hyster lift truck dealership. 1948 The John Deere agricultural tractor and farm machinery franchise is gained. 1958 Starts on-site servicing of Caterpillar equipment for the New Zealand and the United States Antarctic programs. 1960s Goughs develops Australasia’s first computerized, nationwide Parts distribution network. 1973 Goughs sets up the first Scheduled Oil Sampling laboratory in Australasia. The lab identifies abnormal mechanical wear from oil samples. 1974 Chch Head Office moves to Hornby from its Cashel St site in the city centre. 1986 Launch of MONARC, a totally integrated on-line, real-time computer system developed in-house using the new LINC software. 1992 Goughs acquires Transport Wholesale Limited, Transport Specialties Limited, Aries Engineering and Reyco Australia. 1993 Appointed New Zealand dealer for Thunderbird forestry equipment. 1994 Gough Engineering commences operation as a separate business unit. 1996 Gough Finance Limited established as a separate entity. 1998 MONARC is replaced with Caterpillar's all-encompassing Dealer Business System. 1999 Goughs acquires Westinghouse Air Brake Systems (Australia) and commences purchases of CESCO Forklift Hire businesses to develop a national rental fleet. 2000 Goughs launches Cat Rental in New Zealand. 2001 Goughs Institute of Training is established and is the first 100% dealer-owned Institute in the world. 2002 Goughs wins a $180M, 5yr contract to supply and support mining machinery at Macraes in North Otago. 2004 Goughs signs a preferred supplier agreement with Works Infrastructure which sees Works commence major investment in new Caterpillar machinery. 2006 Goughs Power Systems is launched as a separate division to recognize the growing potential in the marine and power generation markets. 2007 Goughs sales arms are divided into two major Groups – the Equipment Group (Cat, Cat Rental, Forklifts and Engineering) and the Transport Group (TWL, TSL and Gough Transport Systems {the latter being the Australian companies}). The first Full Rental Services (FRS) branch for Cat Rental is opened in Chch. On 13th September, the Company recognizes 75 yrs as a Cat dealer. Formal celebrations will be held early in 2008. |
